Introduction
As
I have already talk about in the group blog, we are a group from college of
Electronic and Information Engineering. That not only shows we are three
students who did not know anything about these kind of course and knowledge and
learning style before, but also show what kind of people we three are. To be
honest, choosing to ne an engineering student, we are, to some extent, kind of
people who are very direct, simple and target oriented. So we may not have so
much conflict in teamwork and course assignment, as we have already known that
common conflict means a process that begins when one party perceives that
another party has negatively affected, or is about to negatively affect,
something that the first party cares about. Peoples would get frustration when
their concerns are neglected and the negative consequences can be devastating.
It could possibly lead to high turnover rates, employee dissatisfaction,
inefficiencies between work units, sabotage, grievances and strike. According
to Robbins Judge (2007). Our goal is clear, so we do not think to much about
some useless things. However this do not mean we have no conflict in our group
assignment.
Team
member have to communicate virtually or rely on virtual
technologies to coordinate and collaborate
I
will mainly talk about our problem caused by communicate in virtual ways and how
we deal with these conflict.
Our
group members have different courses and some of us even have internship in Shenzhen.
It is obvious that we do not have time to do course assignment together. So we
have to find another method to finish our assignment—and actually we find the
way. We use virtual technologies as our communication tool. We start to
communicate on mobile devices and computer. QQ and we chat is the most common
tools we used, and sometimes we use google doc, too.
At first we feel great for
using these kind of virtual
technologies because these technologies solved our problems and let us can
complete our work successfully. However, after few weeks, some new problem
appears:
1. Because
we are not do assignment face to face, we find it is very hard to deliver one
member’s thoughts and ideas to other group members accurately and integrally,
there always be some misunderstanding.
2. Modification
and integration are also be harder.
3.
What’s more, do not communication face to face are not good for development of
our team relationship, either.
Why this
would happen?
Communicating
with others orally and face to face has the advantage that people can acquire
your message immediately and react to what you have said as soon as possible. It
is really an efficient way for exchange thoughts and ideas. What's more, your gestures,
body language and expression can reach the other people and help them
understand you better as you are talking to him. Its disadvantage is that just
because both of you are saying something that has just come to your mind, so it
is quite possible that your words are lack of logic or badly-organized.
On the
contrary, written communication can overcome this short-coming, since you can
have a longer time considering what you are going to say, so you can organize
your words better. However, written language is always passing the information
that belongs to the past. This is because writing takes some time and when you
finish it, your mind may has already changed to some other topic. And after
all, talking is always easy to show your complex thoughts than writing or
typing.
And longtime
not see each other will make us become unfamiliar with our group mates,
sometimes it is very important to know your partners present situation because
that make you know what you can say and what you cannot and make your partner
in bad mood will do harm to your performance in assignment.
Resolutions
Fortunately,
we finally solve these problem though it take us long time.
Negotiation
(bargain) online
We
cannot communicate face to face because of our inherent condition, but it also
mean our time online is much more. So we decide to negotiate
about our ideas and thoughts every day after the assignment published. Actually,
negotiation is really a good way to make others understand you. Using virtual
technologies, our time is much more than those who just talk face to face. We
can simply talk about the topic for several days, and even each of us have totally
different ideas about the work, after negotiate for days, we can draw a conclusion.
And usually the outcome is very strict and logical and integrate well by all our
thoughts.
Concern
more about others and talk about common interest
We find
that you want to make good collaboration, you should know each other well first,
and you want to comprehend others, you should show your concern. When we talk about
our work, sometimes we find we cannot understand why our partner will come up
with so strange ideas. However, when we start to talk about ourselves, some
question seems have the answers. We start to concern about each other and know
each’s hobbies and interest. Surprisingly, we have many interest in common. After
that when we talk about our work, we would also talk about these things we like
and interesting things happened to ourselves. We have to say out relationship
and efficiency and even quality of our assignment improved after that.
Show more
trust and toleration
However
there is some question and problem that just cannot come to agreement. After wasting
a lot of time, we realized we should show more trust and spend more time to
comprehend other’s outcome and reflect appropriately. Maybe we just cannot
agree about other’s idea, but why not give in for once and show more confidence
in our partner. Trust and collaborate can make a team more creative and harmonious
.we may not understand him at present, but later , after we know more and learn
more ,we find it is not so hard to accept some ideas we thought like idiot
before. It is not a problem anymore.
Conclusion
Everyone
is born with different characters and brought up in different background. Thanks to the individual differences, we find
the world rich and colorful. To reach the same goal, we may have various ways
and methods, but all we want is make it better, so collaboration is the only choice.
In order to collaborate under the differences, communication and negotiation
are essential to bring team members together.
By trusting and show your interest each other, we can deal with almost
everything technically,
It is
really my honor to learn from Frank and Joy and have a nice group with Fred and
Allen. Nothing better in this semester and it will be a meaningful memory last
forever.
